Indiana Nets $1.3M in Whistleblower Lawsuit
Indiana has received more than $1.3 million as part of the settlement of a whistleblower lawsuit against Stericycle Inc. The suit argued that the medical waste disposal service provider overcharged states and the federal government.
Indiana was one of 12 states to share in a combined $26.75 million settlement. The case started when a former company employee alleged that Stericycle had been overcharging government entities and submitting inaccurate bills. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller says various state entities were overcharged by the Illinois-based company since 2005.
Indiana’s net payment will be $1,359,942. Zoeller’s office says the state will determine later how those funds will be used.
The other entities involved in the settlement are the U.S. Department of Justice and the states of Illinois, Florida, California, Delaware, Nevada, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Virginia as well as the District of Columbia.
