The Indiana Department of Transportation is part of an eight-state group that has secured $25 million for regional truck parking information technology along major freight routes from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program. A $10 million TIGER grant will also support facilities and infrastructure rail-to-barge and truck-to-rail projects related to the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville.
The other states involved in the regional trucking project are: Kansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The U.S. Department of Transportation says information about safe truck parking availability for drivers needing rest and overnight stays will be disseminated through smartphone applications, dynamic road signage, websites and parking facilities through the nearly $29 million effort.
Plans for the $17 million project in Jeffersonville include rail infrastructure, a rail-to-barge transfer facility, a truck-to-rail intermodal facility near the planned heavy-haul connector. The DOT project description says the construction will ease the higher truck traffic volumes expected from completion of the East End Bridge. It will also boost loading and unloading capacity and efficiency at the port.
