UAW Council to Vote on GM Deal
The United Auto Workers National General Motors Council will vote on a tentative labor agreement with the automaker Wednesday that would impact thousands of Hoosier workers. General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) has more than 4,000 workers at its Fort Wayne Assembly plant and around 600 at its facility in Bedford.
The committee says it secured "significant gains and job security protections" in the negotiation. The council meets in Detroit Wednesday to consider the agreement. If approved, the proposal will go to union members throughout the country. The UAW says says it will make details of the agreement available immediately after approval.
The vote comes a week after union workers approved a four-year deal with Fiat Chrysler. That agreement impacts more than 7,000 workers at Chrysler transmission operations in Kokomo and Tipton County.
?Over the summer, GM announced it would invest more than $1 billion to more than double the size of its Fort Wayne Assembly plant. The expansion will include a pre-treatment facility, expanded body shop and increased assembly capabilities.
