With several new hotels under construction, organizers say the demand for hospitality workers is high in the region.
Fourteen people are participating in the new SMART Hospitality and Tourism Program. The group will begin Monday with a panel of hotel general managers discussing how to succeed in the industry.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to play a role in this very important program,” said Carolyne Wallace, director of sales for Visit South Bend Mishawaka. “The hospitality industry in our county is strong and growing. We have an immediate need for enthusiastic, trained individuals to serve our visitors and guests and the demand is expected to increase over the next several years. The ability to provide training for our own residents to start them on a career path in hospitality is a win-win situation for all of us.”
Participants who finish the course will be ServeSafe certified and will receive a certificate from Bethel College. They will also have the chance to attend a hospitality job fair.
The pilot program is funded through a grant from the city of South Bend.
