Organizers say a more than four-acre plot near the current Zionsville High School outdoor tennis courts would be suitable for the privately-funded proposal that is estimated at more than $1.7 million.
The effort is three years in the making and the plans are roughly patterned after the nonprofit Evansville Tennis Center that opened around the same time Boone County organizers received their nonprofit status. The group’s mission states the six-court facility will "provide access to aspiring tennis players of all ages at a reasonable cost." It would offer space to local leagues, U.S. Tennis Association matches and community outreach initiatives such as activities for players who are underprivileged or have disabilities.
The proposal is still quite a distance from fruition, as the land must still be purchased, zoning clearances must be attained and local governmental approvals must be received.
Funding sources are also a consideration, with the group proposing a membership-based structure with a major portion of the startup dollars coming from founding members paying what the preliminary business plan figures to be $7,500 per household for five years or $15,000 for 10 years.
