The IMM says the move will solidify its event as the "signature marathon" in Indianapolis, with an estimated annual economic impact of more than $3 million.
Beginning in 2016, the Indianapolis Marathon race weekend will continue only as a half marathon and 5k. Both events will remain unchanged this year. The 2015 Indianapolis Marathon is set for Saturday, October 17, with the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon to follow on Saturday, November 7.
The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon began eight years ago. The Indianapolis Marathon has been around for 20 years, and had previously announced that 2015 would be the final year for the event. IMM Executive Director Blake Boldon says the acquisition will allow it to keep a 20-year tradition alive and educate the city’s youth about "the benefits of healthy living, proper nutrition and, of course, exercise."
