Purdue, Crane-Area ‘Snowball’ Grows

Subscribe NowA new collaboration among key innovators in the state could be a sign of more major partnerships to come. The players, including several Purdue University and Purdue Research Foundation entities, WestGate Technology Park, the University of Southern Indiana, Radius Indiana and the Battery Innovation Center, are joining forces to drive up commercialization potential and target more funding for research. The primary objective is to get discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace more efficiently. Executives say the partnership will yield technologies in some of the state’s most prominent industries.
Purdue says it will involve discoveries in life sciences, health care, defense, information technology, manufacturing and agricultural science fields.
Purdue Office of Technology Commercialization Vice President Chad Pittman says the minimum goal of the collaboration is to "connect ‘silos’ and reduce obstacles to innovation." He says it is important for innovators throughout the state to see the value of working together to collectively improve the stature of everyone.
Pittman says people outside the state are beginning to take notice of the work within WestGate and the greater community tied to the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center. He believes this announcement is another example of collaborations that are gaining momentum and additional phases will be announced "very soon."
Late last year, the university and Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center detailed a commercialization-centered partnership that involves the university helping promote Crane research and technology. At the time, advisers estimated the two parties combined possessed more than 700 pieces of intellectual property looking to be commercialized.
