The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has released a draft environmental impact statement for a proposed $480 million casino project in northern Indiana. The plan, being pursued by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, calls for a casino, hotel and tribal housing on a 166-acre site in South Bend. The study suggests the project would lead to 2,000 permanent jobs and nearly 1,500 construction jobs.

Details include a 18-story hotel attached to a casino. The lodging could employ 150 workers.

Plans also call for 44 units of housing and a community center.

It would take two years to build.

The study also proposes two alternatives: One in Elkhart with a similar hotel/casino plan and one at a different site in South Bend that would forgo the casino and instead include a travel plaza, family entertainment center and retail outlet space.

The band has set up a website detailing progress of the project, including an executive summary of the study.

The site says the band is scheduled to hold a public meeting April 14 at the South Bend Century Center to take feedback on the draft environmental impact statement.
