INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Family members of former State Sen. Sue Landske, R-Cedar Lake, have announced that the longtime Northwest Indiana legislator passed away Friday after a long battle with cancer. She was 77.
Funeral services will be held Monday at Memory Lane Memorial Park, located at 6305 W. Lincoln Highway in Crown Point. Service times have not yet been finalized.
Landske spearheaded several lasting improvements to state law during her Senate career, including Indiana’s “Lemon Law” that protects consumers from purchasing defective vehicles, free tuition at state colleges and universities for Hoosier Purple Heart recipients, and a state living-will policy that gives adults choices for medical treatment if they become incapacitated.
Landske was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2013 and chose not to seek reelection in 2014 after serving in the State Senate for 30 years.
“Sue Landske will rightly be remembered as a devoted public servant for Northwest Indiana, as well as a woman of integrity, strength and grace,” said Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne. “Those of us who had the privilege of serving alongside Sue in the General Assembly appreciated her warmth, friendship and wise counsel. On behalf of the entire Senate, I extend our deepest condolences to her family. She will be greatly missed.”
State Sen. Rick Niemeyer, who was elected by the voters of Senate District 6 last year to succeed Landske, said her death is a sad loss for the people of Northwest Indiana.
“I had the pleasure of knowing Sue my entire adult life. She filled my father’s seat in the State Senate when he stepped down to become a County Commissioner, and she and I worked together closely during my time in the House of Representatives,” Niemeyer said. “She was a passionate champion in the Statehouse for our area, and I’m saddened by her passing. Indiana will continue to benefit from Sue’s service for a long, long time.”
Landske was elected to the Senate in 1984 after serving as Center Township Assessor in Lake County from 1978 to 1984. During her Senate tenure, she was named Assistant Senate President Pro Tempore and chaired committees dealing with transportation, commerce and criminal law issues. Most notably, she chaired the Senate Committee on Elections from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2009 until her retirement in 2014.
Landske received numerous public service awards during her career, including Outstanding Republican Senator, Lake County Republican of the Year, Business and Professional Woman of the Year, and Jaycees Citizen of the Year. She was also a two-time recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award and a retired colonel in the National Guard Reserve.
