A bill that would allow Sunday sales of alcohol in groceries, liquor stores and pharmacies is expected to be heard in an Indiana House committee Wednesday. Indiana Chamber of Commerce Vice President Cameron Carter says he expects a vote on House Bill 1026 and adds there could be a “behind the counter” amendment added to the measure. Indiana is the only state in the nation that does not allow Sunday retail carryout. During an INside the Statehouse interview in Studio(i), Carter weighed in on the Sunday alcohol sales bill and two other measures expected to receive attention this week. The bill is vigorously opposed by the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers, which says it would be an economic hardship on the state's liquor stores.

Previous efforts to legalize Sunday carryout of alcohol in Indiana have failed to even generate a committee vote at the Statehouse.

The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers contends Sunday carryout would be an hurt hundreds of Hoosier liquor stores, especially “mom and pop” stores that would face added the added expense of opening another day each week.

House Bill 1026 is authored by Rep. Sean Eberhart, R-Shelbyville, and Rep. Terri Austin, D-Anderson.
