MUNCIE, Ind. – Bernard “Bernie” Hannon, associate vice president for business affairs and assistant treasurer at Ball State since 2010, will serve as the university’s next vice president for business affairs. Ball State President Paul W. Ferguson announced the appointment Feb. 3.
Hannon, who begins his new duties immediately, was selected for the post following a nationwide search. He succeeds Randy Howard, who was named senior vice president and chief financial officer at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in August.
“Bernie has brought to his service at Ball State University significant experience in higher education finance and has served the university with excellence. He has been an invaluable resource through the recent transition in business affairs and demonstrated strong leadership and insight,” Ferguson said. “I am delighted he is willing to join our leadership team and work to advance Ball State University in new and innovative ways.”
As associate vice president for business affairs and assistant treasurer, Hannon had direct and indirect oversight of the university's financial functions, including budgeting, finance, investments, bursar functions, accounts payable, capital finance, and contracts and grants. He also has played a major role in the transition team handling business functions since Howard’s departure.

Hannon has 15 years of experience in higher education management as well as policy development and financing. He was the assistant budget director for the State of Indiana from 2001 to 2005, where he oversaw the state’s $7.5 billion education budget. Additionally, he was the higher education budget analyst for Indiana, providing policy and fiscal analysis and recommendations to the state budget director. He also assisted in drafting the state’s biennial higher education budget.
Hannon earned his law degree at the Indiana University School of Law and holds bachelor degrees in international affairs and Russian language from Florida State University.
