A bill that allows the Indiana State Board of Education to elect its own chair has cleared an Indiana Senate committee. The proposal, sponsored by Senator Travis Holdman (R-19), also calls on the board to be comprised of a mix of gubernatorial appointees, lawmaker choices and the superintendent of public instruction. Last month, the House Education Committee approved a bill that would call on the board to elect its own executive director, a position currently held by Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz.
