United Steel Workers Local 7-1, which represents more than 1,000 steel workers at the BP Whiting Refinery, has announced a temporary agreement to stave off a strike. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report unionized oil industry workers at nine other refineries throughout the country went on strike last night after their shifts. Shell Oil Co. is in contract negotiations with the USW, which represents workers at more than 65 refineries and 230 facilities nationwide.

Plant officials say replacement workers are on standby and have been trained to run the operation should a strike hit.
