INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indianapolis Indians today announced that the club’s sixth-winningest manager, Dean Treanor, will return to guide the Tribe in 2015. The skipper is entering his fifth consecutive season at the helm of the Indians and will be joined by the new additions of hitting coach, Butch Wynegar, and pitching coach, Stan Kyles, and the welcome returns of trainer, Bryan Housand, and strength and conditioning coach, Ricky White.
Treanor is just the sixth skipper in team history to manage the Tribe for five or more seasons. The San Luis Obispo, California native notched his 300th Indians victory last year and currently boasts the best overall record (317-258) among skippers in the franchise’s prestigious 300-Win Club. He has led the Tribe to four straight winning seasons and will return with the opportunity to become the first team skipper to post a winning record through five consecutive campaigns.
“Dean has shown that you can both win at Triple-A and develop players for the Pirates when you insist that the game is played the way it is supposed to be played,” Indians Vice President of Baseball and Administrative Affairs, Cal Burleson, said. “Dean does that as well as anyone we have ever had as our manager.”
Treanor’s tenure has also featured four straight top-two finishes in the division with back-to-back IL West crowns from 2012-13. The all-time managerial great is currently overseeing a playoff-bound Estrellas squad in the Dominican Winter Leagues – a circuit in which he recently won his third Manager of the Year award – and his return to the Indians will mark his 29th year of minor league instruction.
“We believe we have the best Manager in Triple-A Baseball in Dean Treanor,” Burleson said. “Dean has led us to two first-place finishes and two second-place finishes in his four years here as our manager, and we feel confident that he will once again get the most out of the talent we receive.”
A new addition to the staff, but familiar face of the International League, is hitting coach Wynegar, who has served in that same capacity with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre from 2007-14. While with his former IL team, the York, Pennsylvania native guided an offense that powered playoff appearances in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012, and a Governor’s Cup title in 2008. Wynegar is a 13-year Major League veteran and is coming off a 2014 season in which his Scranton offense ranked first in the league in batting average and fifth both homers and runs scored.
Wynegar’s fellow newcomer on staff, Kyles, joins the Tribe ranks after overseeing Double-A Altoona’s pitching staff over the previous two seasons. The Chicago, Illinois native facilitated the successful development of several of the Pirates’ top prospects during his time with the Curve, and after a strong sendoff of top farmhand Jameson Taillon in 2013, mentored three Eastern League All-Star selections in 2014 in Ryan Beckman, Kenn Kasparek and Adrian Sampson. Kyles previously coached the Indians’ pitching staff in 2004, but the upcoming season will mark his first on staff during Pirates affiliation.
Rounding out the Indians staff is Tribe trainer Housand, who returns to the Indians for his fifth year of service, and strength and conditioning coach White, who enters his second season with the team.
