The mayor of New Albany says he is doing everything in his power to hang on to one of the city's longest-standing employers. Mayor Jeff Gahan says One Southern Indiana, Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann and WorkOne have joined the fight to keep the General Mills Inc. (NYSE: GIS) plant, which employs around 400 workers. The company announced a preliminary decision last week to close the more than 50-year-old operation, which the mayor says came as a surprise. Gahan tells Inside INdiana Business he believes there is still a “window” of opportunity for negotiation, but does not want to create false hope. The company says, if the decision is final, operations would cease in the middle of next year.

The plant has been run by General Mills since 1959. It produces refrigerated goods, including the Pillsbury brand.

Gahan says he has reached out to General Mills Chief Executive Officer Ken Powell, but has not received a response.
