The president of a Warsaw manufacturer says it pays to be a “little battleship” in a sea of orthopedic giants. Alpha Manufacturing & Design LLC's Ben Garden says the strategy to not grow too quickly allows the company to avoid some regulations and remain a “rapid-response business.” The manufacturer announced plans last year to invest $5.6 million to increase production and add more than 30 jobs by 2018. Alpha Manufacturing was spotlighted in the most recent edition of the Life Sciences INdiana e-newsletter. The company makes orthopedic instruments used during surgery to prepare and install implants. It focuses on the spine, hip, knee and shoulder areas of the business.

Garden says the expansion is necessary because the company is currently producing at maximum capacity.

News Release

WARSAW, Ind. – Alpha Manufacturing & Design, LLC, a precision contract manufacturer for the orthopedics industry, announced plans today to expand its operations here, creating up to 32 new jobs by 2018.

The homegrown-Hoosier company will invest $5.62 million to construct and equip a new 12,000 square-foot addition to its current 5,000 square-foot facility in Warsaw. The facility, which will be fully operational by April, will allow the company to increase production capacity for its current orthopedic models and enhance the development of next-generation prototypes.

“Hoosier entrepreneurs continue to amaze,” said Eric Doden, president of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. “Despite launching in 2008 during the depths of the economic recession, Alpha Manufacturing found its niche and grew, showing us what's possible with determination and perseverance in a business-friendly environment like we have here in Indiana.”

Alpha Manufacturing is currently hiring skilled CNC machinists, CNC programmers and quality control personnel. Interested applicants may apply by emailing dberning@alpha-mfg.com.

“The Warsaw, Indiana-based orthopedic cluster has been the perfect fit for Alpha Manufacturing and its growth,” said Ben Garden, president of Alpha Manufacturing. “With three of the world's five largest orthopedic medical companies residing in Warsaw, an employee talent pool second to none and a host of related firms to streamline our special process requirements, the decision is simple and easy to make. Warsaw is home.”

Founded in 2008 with just two employees, Alpha Manufacturing is a precision manufacturer for the orthopedics industry, specializing in spine, hip, knee and shoulder orthotics. With its growth, the company will be equipped with state-of-the-art tools for the production of stainless steel and titanium orthotics. Alpha Manufacturing is ISO 1345 and ISO 9001-certified within the medical manufacturing industry.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Alpha Manufacturing and Design, LLC up to $300,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $16,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the company is not eligible to claim incentives. Kosciusko County will consider additional incentives at the request of the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation.

“We are pleased to see this small but outstanding orthopedic manufacturing company double in size and stay in its home county,” said Robert Sanders, chairman of the Kosciusko County Council. “It is the type of innovative small business that Kosciusko County appreciates.”

Alpha Manufacturing is the second company this week to announce plans to grow in Kosciusko County. Yesterday agricultural supplier North Central Cooperative announced it will invest $8.27 million to add more than 18,000 square feet of production and office space in Mentone, creating up to 15 new jobs in the coming years.

About IEDC

Created in 2005 to replace the former Department of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation is governed by a 12-member board chaired by Governor Mike Pence. Victor Smith serves as the Indiana Secretary of Commerce and Eric Doden is the president of the IEDC.

The IEDC oversees programs enacted by the General Assembly including tax credits, workforce training grants and public infrastructure assistance. All tax credits are performance-based.
