LAFAYETTE, Ind. (December 16, 2014) – The SIA Foundation awarded a record dollar amount of $60,238.10 in grants to nine deserving Indiana charitable organizations during the December 2014 Grant Awards Ceremony held today at SIA’s Training & Reception Center. This is the third time that two $10,000 grants have been awarded for a cycle.
The grant recipients represent not-for-profit organizations in: Tippecanoe, Boone, Marion, Carroll, and Allen counties. Representatives from the charitable organizations along with the SIA Foundation Board of Directors and members of the Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. Operations Committee attended the Foundation’s grant celebration.
Indiana not-for-profit organizations which seek funding for capital projects in one of three areas – arts and culture, health and welfare, or education – are eligible to apply for SIA Foundation Grants which are awarded in June and December each year.
SIA Foundation Grant recipient organizations for the December 2014 grant cycle include:
Bach Chorale Singers, Tippecanoe County – $5,475.00
Bach Chorale Singers is dedicated to enriching the quality of life of the midnorth region of Indiana through the study, practice, and performance of choral music. This grant will fund the purchase of two office computers, a server, and a laptop. This equipment will be integrated, permitting moving of files electronically, both internally and from concert sites.
City of Delphi Parks Department, Carroll County – $2,926.00
This grant will be used to enhance City Park in Delphi with four comfortable benches, one for each section of the playground. City Park has a wonderfully large playground area with equipment suitable for all ages, and these benches will allow adults to sit and enjoy watching their children play.
Growing Places Indy, Marion County – $8,000.00
Growing Places Indy’s mission is to cultivate the culture of urban agriculture and healthy lifestyles, empowering individuals and communities to grow well, eat well, and live well. Funds will support the build out of a large water catchment project at their urban farming site at the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center in Indianapolis. This includes guttering, rain barrels, plumbing supplies, pumps and irrigation materials.
McCutcheon High School Robotics Team, Tippecanoe County – $5,000.00
This grant will be used to purchase tools, equipment, and supplies for their 2015 robotics season.
Indianapolis Zoo, Marion County – $8,205.00
This grant will fund equipment needs to enhance the Zoo’s on-ground interpretive interactions with guests. The Indianapolis Zoo will purchase microphones and speakers to replace existing equipment for the keeper chats and dolphin show. They will also purchase new speakers, tablets, and microphone packs for the interpretive experience in the new Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center.
City of Lafayette Department of Parks and Recreation, Tippecanoe County
– $10,000.00
Grant funds will be used to replace the transmission and engine of the historic Iron Horse locomotive which operates the Columbian Park Express train ride. This train ride has brought joy to hundreds of thousands of riders.
Matthew 25 Inc., Allen County – $3,732.10
Matthew 25 is a free hearing clinic that is in need of equipment to help achieve its purpose of providing quality health care for needy, uninsured, and low-income individuals in Allen County. Grant funds will purchase two audiometers to screen and diagnose patients more quickly.
Fishing Has No Boundaries of Mid-North Indiana, Tippecanoe County –
$10,000.00
Fishing Has No Boundaries is an organization whose goal is to open up the great outdoors for people with disabilities through the world of fishing. Funds will go toward the purchase of a second 27 ft. total accessible pontoon boat with trailer. It will have 40-inch gates with pedestal chairs that are easy to remove in order to accommodate wheelchairs.
International Center, Tippecanoe County – $6,900.00
The International Center creates cross-cultural connections between the diverse residents of Greater Lafayette through education, the arts, cultural events, cultural information and assistance, and housing. This grant will go toward adding/updating technology needed for marketing, finance, databases, classes & community programing.
The SIA Foundation will be launching a redesigned website at the beginning of the first grant cycle of 2015, which starts in January. The site has many new features, but the most notable is the new online application system. Since its inception the Foundation has utilized paper applications, but starting in January 2015 all capital grant applications will be done online which will result in paper and cost reduction for the Foundation and grant applicants.
The SIA Foundation was established in October 1997, with a One Million Dollar gift from Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA). SIA has made a subsequent contributions bringing the total contribution to $2 million. The SIA Foundation uses funding to award grants and matching gifts to not-for-profit entities located in the State of Indiana. Since 1997, the SIA Foundation has awarded over $180,000 in Matching Gifts and over $908,000 in capital grants, totaling over $1 million since its inception.
