Budget Battle Brewing at Statehouse

Posted: Updated:

The publisher of IndyPolitics.org believes the two-year budget will be the defining issue of the 2015 Legislative session. Abdul-Hakim Shabazz says "without a whole lot of cash to play with," questions remain as to which programs will get the most significant piece of the pie. He says Indiana is in a better position than nearby states that are facing cuts or deficits. He says if the recently-released revenue forecast sticks, "everyone should get a little more money."

Shabazz believes much of the discussion will focus on education. Particularly, he asks which area will get additional funding? Directing more for urban or rural districts? Supplementing the salaries of teachers?

All-in-all, Shabazz says Indiana is showing it is in good financial standing by having discussions about what proposals to boost. He says other states are just "trying to keep their heads above water."
