The founder of Indianapolis-based Interactive Intelligence Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ININ) says the company's 20th anniversary is a significant milestone at a time when many tech businesses “die or are acquired long before that point.” Don Brown founded the company in 1994 with fewer than a dozen employees. Since then, it has grown into an Indiana tech giant with more than 2,000 workers and $1.6 billion in total sales. Brown credits the company's longevity to a continued commitment to research and development and a local work force in both good and bad economic times. The company says its payroll has grown from $14.4 million in 2001 to $92.7 million in 2013. Its notable Indiana customers include Angie's List (Nasdaq: ANGI), Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY) and Indiana University.

Brown co-founded Software Artistry Inc. in 1988 and served as CEO until founding Interactive Intelligence in 1994.

Also on Tuesday, the company was named one of the “Top 10 Coolest Companies to Work for in Indianapolis” by O.C. Tanner.

News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — Interactive Intelligence Group Inc. (Nasdaq:ININ), a global provider of software and services for communications, collaboration and customer engagement, has been named among the Top 10 Coolest Companies to Work for in Indianapolis.

Interactive Intelligence received the honor from O.C. Tanner, a developer of employee recognition strategies and rewards programs serving approximately 8,000 clients in 150 countries.

O.C. Tanner selected the Top 10 companies based on past best places to work awards, employee reviews, company culture, and evidence of giving back to the community.

“We're often described by employees as having the flexibility of a startup with all the benefits of a big company,” said Kim Kean, vice president of human resources for Interactive Intelligence. “Our mission is to treat team members like family, while helping each individual build a career based on his or her unique talents.”

Interactive Intelligence offers a number of employee perks, from Free Bagel Friday, to foosball and massages. Employee recognition includes service recognition, impact awards, and day-to-day awards that range from gift cards to spot bonuses.

In addition to standard benefits, Interactive Intelligence offers paternity leave, an onsite health care clinic, exercise classes, and more. The company also stresses philanthropy, offering volunteer opportunities for employees through its charitable Interactive Intelligence Foundation.

The company's world headquarters include four buildings spanning nearly 300,000 square feet. The facility boasts an award-winning modern design, fitness center, game room and caf?.

Spurred by growth – company revenues increased 34 percent in 2013 — Interactive Intelligence is set to expand its headquarters with another 100,000-plus square foot building this year.

Today, Interactive Intelligence employs 1,074 people in Indiana and more than 2,000 people worldwide.

“While many team members are initially drawn to our culture and benefits, common feedback we get after employees have been hired is the advantage of working with really smart people,” Kean said. “Team members say that as a result of working with such high-caliber colleagues, their own skills have grown faster, which has contributed to expanded opportunities and a more exciting work environment.”

Dr. Donald E. Brown founded Interactive Intelligence in 1994 and has since grown it into a publicly traded, global company generating $318 million in annual revenues.

Interactive Intelligence has received numerous other accolades for creating a positive workplace, including most recently the 2014 Indiana Chamber of Commerce Best Places to Work in Indiana award (eighth consecutive year), Mashable's 2014 Seven Best Tech Companies to Work For award, and Glassdoor's 2014 Employees' Choice award.
