Indianapolis, Ind. — Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann today announced the appointment of John Dement as the new Director of Technology Commercialization for the Indiana Office of Defense Development (IODD). He joins the IODD staff from Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act that allows a federal agency to “loan” an employee to another unit of government. His position with IODD is the first of its kind in the nation.
Lt. Governor Ellspermann noted, “Adding John to our staff is an important step as we work to enhance the value of the U.S. Department of Defense installations in Indiana by both fulfilling their missions in the defense of our country but also as economic engines for our state. The Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center as a certified Federal lab where world-class research and development in many areas is occurring provides unique opportunities for commercialization of technology.
“Over the past seven years, John has served as Crane's Technology Transfer Manager and has grown the Crane technology transfer program to national prominence within the Federal Laboratory network and serves on the Executive Board of the Federal Laboratory Consortium. He has been a leader in promoting and facilitating technology transfer and we are grateful that he will bring his expertise to our work in our Office of Defense Development.”
Dement earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering at the University of Evansville and Masters in Public Administration from Indiana University. He began his career with McDonnell Douglas as a stress engineer on the F-15E and then joined the Department of the Navy in 1990. During his time at Crane, he has been a systems engineer in Washington, D.C. and a Fleet Science Advisor in Hawaii.
The Indiana Office of Defense Development was established by Governor Mike Pence within the Office of the Lt. Governor to be a central point of communication between state government and the ten primary U.S. Department of Defense installations or assets in Indiana.
