Noble Americas South Bend Ethanol LLC is expecting to begin shipping ethanol produced at a once-vacant St. Joseph County facility in the next couple of weeks. The South Bend Tribune reports the company, which purchased the operation last year in a bankruptcy sale, has invested $40 million into improvements. The plant opened in the 1980s and shut down in 2012 when New Energy Corp., its then-owner, went bankrupt.

The company currently employs 65 people at the plant.

Both the investment and the job totals have exceeded Noble Americas' initial commitment to the city.

The plant will produce the fuel additive, as well as distillers dried grains and corn oil. The city helped attract the company's investment with the purchase of a $2 million corn-oil extractor, which the publication reports is still in the process of being obtained.
