South Bend officials say the city is still committed to a multi-million dollar effort to turn a historic downtown hotel into apartments, despite a change in developers. The redevelopment commission has awarded the LaSalle Hotel project to Fishers-based RealAmerica Development and Management LLC after parting ways this week with Great Lakes Capital Development. In a statement, South Bend Department of Community Investment Executive Director Scott Ford said the concept of 67 market-rate apartments and ground-level retail space remains unchanged.

Statement From South Bend Department of Community Investment Executive Director Scott Ford:

“It's a different developer, but the redevelopment concept for the LaSalle Hotel remains-which is to create 67 market-rate apartment units with retail space on the ground floor. The City is committed to the revival of this important building on the National Register of Historic Places, and we're excited to move forward to meet the demand for more housing downtown. The transfer enables Great Lakes Capital to look at potential new South Bend projects, and opens to door for Real America to expand on their expertise of bringing back historic properties to their original grandeur.”
