A recently-completed $47 million lakefront project in Whiting is reeling after significant damage from a Friday storm that caused 20-foot waves to flood a park. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report Whiting Lakefront Park remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians as cleanup continues. The city of Whiting declared a state of emergency after the storm, but hopes to reopen the roads today. The paper reports restrictions will continue on shoreline access until damage is repaired. City leaders say several dozen trees were uprooted.

The six-year Whiting Lakefront Park effort was designed to transform the area along the Lake Michigan shoreline into an economic asset. The project included a performing arts pavilion, an improved trail system and watercraft access to the Lake Michigan shoreline. The project was dedicated in September.
