West Lafayette, Ind. — Purdue University President Mitch Daniels will embark on a five-day trip beginning Saturday (Nov. 1) to strengthen partnerships in India.
Daniels and Suresh Garimella, Purdue executive vice president for research and partnerships, will visit with university and corporate partners in an ongoing effort to make a global impact with research and educational engagement. Mary Dennis, vice president for international alumni programs of the Purdue Alumni Association, also will be in India with Daniels and Garimella.
“Purdue has long and deep ties with India that involve research collaborations with leading Indian educational institutions and profound interactions among respective faculty,” Daniels said. “Many of the thousands of our alumni living in India are leaders in business, academics and government. We have great opportunities to develop strategic partnerships in value-added agriculture, engineering, manufacturing, aerospace, science, technology, defense and cybersecurity, and education.”
Close to 1,500 students from India are currently enrolled at Purdue and thousands of Purdue alumni currently live in India. The university has the second-largest international student population among U.S. public universities and is third overall, according to the Institute of International Education in 2013-14. India has the second-highest number of international students at Purdue.
Daniels and Garimella will be at a Purdue India Alumni Dinner, organized by the Purdue Alumni Association, on Tuesday (Nov. 4) in Mumbai, where Daniels will make remarks. Also during the trip, they will visit Hyderabad to meet with industry and government leaders and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai, where a partnership agreement will be signed.
Purdue currently has several partnerships involving engineering, agriculture, business, science, technology, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, liberal arts and technology with institutions in India. The organizations include IIT Madras, Punjab Agricultural University, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Patna University's Centre for Water Resources Studies, Birla Institute of Technology, B.S. Abdur Rahman University, Indian Institute of Management, and Satyam Computer Services Limited.
Purdue also has student exchange programs with the Birla Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Technology. Purdue also sponsors the GEARE program in Bombay.
“These partnerships benefit the local community and Indiana by making them more visible globally,” Garimella said. “They help bring talents and ideas that contribute to the state's prosperity as well as give our students a truly global education that will enable them to compete in today's worldwide economy.”
Garimella also is the Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of the National Science Foundation Cooling Technologies Research Center. He received his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1985. In 2010 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from that institute.
In January, Daniels led a Purdue delegation that visited Colombia to further a nation-university partnership begun in 2010.
