Library Seeks Funds For $59M Plan

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The road map guiding the future of The Indianapolis Public Library is now available following the public unveiling of the Library's new five-year Strategic Plan, “Yours to Experience,” that focuses on providing greater access to Library services and enhancing the Library’s role to address community needs.
Formal launch of the Strategic Plan occurred during a July 28 event at Central Library where those representing over 150 community and business organizations on a Steering Committee and nine Task Forces were recognized for their volunteer efforts and perspectives on the needs of Indianapolis residents. Public input at community forums and from online surveys also contributed to the plan's formation. The 44-page document, found online at www.indypl.org, describes how the Library will align its services to address local needs in such areas as education, workforce readiness, business development, access to technology, diversity, civic engagement, and nurturing safe and vibrant neighborhoods.
The Strategic Plan was finalized and approved by the Library Board of Trustees in time for initial implementation as part of the Library's proposed 2015 budget and operations plan, which is currently under consideration. With the goal of improving access, reducing geographical gaps in service and eliminating the leasing of Library facilities, an important activity in 2015 will be to purchase new sites for the relocation of the Brightwood and Eagle branches and for a new location along North Michigan Road. Site selection is planned for the relocation of the Glendale Branch and for a new location in Perry and Lawrence Townships.
Other goals throughout the five-year plan will address how the Library will evolve to provide relevant services in the digital age, serve as civic place where community issues can be discussed, and provide services to help job seekers, educators, businesses and diverse populations.
The Library's ability to successfully execute its plans will largely depend on exploring new revenue sources, reducing reliance on property taxes by increasing access to other local option tax revenues, maintaining or increasing profit centers where income may be generated, and redirecting funds from the elimination of leased facilities. Support of The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation in its mission to attract grants and donations for services will be essential.
