Tech Leaders to Descend on Indiana

Indianapolis, Ind. — The Circle City will become the center of the tech universe later this month, when Indiana University hosts visionaries as they collaborate on the future of research and education networks.
It’s all part of the 2014 Technology Exchange, taking place October 26-30 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis. Sponsored by advanced technology consortium Internet2, in collaboration with the US Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the Technology Exchange will bring together 600+ technologists to explore the latest in cloud applications, federated identity, cybersecurity, high performance computing, software-defined networking, network function virtualization, and more. Indiana University, a leading Internet2 member and operator of the Internet2 Network Operations Center, is the first host of the new annual conference.
“With our pool of high-tech talent, world-class networking facilities, and university support for innovation, Indiana really is the Silicon Valley of the Midwest,” said David Jent, IU associate vice president of networks. “IU has a long history of technical innovation and collaboration, making it a natural choice to host the 2014 Technology Exchange. For 16 years, some of the most advanced research and education networks in the world have operated from the state, thanks to our groundbreaking partnership with Internet2 that founded the Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC) at IU. We are honored to build on our thriving collaboration with Internet2 and ESnet by hosting this important event.”
Each day of the Technology Exchange will feature a full-group plenary session, select topic-specific formal talks, and a wide range of informal working discussions, collaborations and meetings. The separate track areas will also incorporate both focused topics and crossover sessions to encourage audience collaboration and discussion.
In addition, Internet2 and ESnet will sponsor a keynote address by transformational technology expert and former Obama Campaign Chief Technology Officer Harper Reed, who will deliver the talk, Pushing Boundaries and Challenging the Norm to Advance Research & Education.
Indiana University will have a strong showing at the Technology Exchange. Brad Wheeler, IU vice president for information technology and chief information officer, will be a panelist on the Wednesday, Oct. 29, general session discussion, Digital Privacy and Cybersecurity: A 21st Century Journey or Illusion? Wheeler will be joined by Fred H. Cate, distinguished professor and C. Ben Dutton Professor of Law at the IU Maurer School of Law, and Lee H. Hamilton, director of IU’s Center on Congress.
Anastasia Morrone, IU associate vice president of learning technologies, will give a plenary talk, Pushing the Boundaries of Traditional Classrooms, on Oct. 27.

The IU booth will highlight the university's networking leadership, notably IU’s management of the world's most advanced research and education networks through the GlobalNOC. Hands-on displays will include IU’s IQ table, a 55-inch touch screen that visitors can manipulate to explore a slide show about IU’s technology-enabled classrooms. Staff members will also be offering tours of the GlobalNOC and the Informatics & Communications Technology Complex (ICTC) on the Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis campus.
