TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Business executives, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists will share their experiences and secrets behind their successful high-tech endeavors during this year’s Rose Startup conference and networking event on October 25 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
The event has been organized by the institute's Rose Innovative Student Entrepreneurs (RISE) Club to allow students to learn from experienced professionals; for alumni to meet and encourage students interested in entrepreneurship; and for potential investors to find out about Indiana-based startups and future business opportunities. Approximately 200 Rose-Hulman students are planning to attend.
There is no cost to attend, and the event is open to interested guests from throughout Indiana, especially students from other colleges and universities. Register at www.rose-hulman.edu/RISE.
Three keynote speeches will feature:
AGNES BERZSENYI — A senior executive at GE Healthcare whose business experience has made her a global leader. Her third startup enterprise within GE is DoseWatch, a web-based application that helps manage dosages for patients. Her experiences have featured work in engineering, quality control, client services, marketing, and product management. Berzsenyi earned her master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rose-Hulman in 1995.
GERALD REA — Co-founded Stray Light Optical Technologies, an advancing energy-efficient lighting firm based in Scottsburg, Indiana. Innovative high-efficiency plasma lighting technology has helped the company establish working partnerships with Boeing, Sandia National Labs, and Multiquip, and provide lighting systems for the Academy Awards’ red carpet runway and NASA’s last shuttle launch. Rea earned bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and optical engineering from Rose-Hulman in 2004.
SALMAN AZHAR, PhD – A former Rose-Hulman computer science professor and highly regarded technology professional who has developed state-of-the-art software products, and managed software development teams. He co-founded DecisionStreet, Swans International, and SoftWeb. His list of current and former clients include Sony, SAP SE, Hewlett-Packard Company, Oracle, Agilent, and several startups.
Planned breakout seminar speakers include Chris Gray, founder, chief executive officer (CEO), and president of the career development and recruitment platform Track Ahead; Charlie Key, founder and CEO of Modulus, a company that provides a premier hosting solution for Node.js and MongoDB applications; Daniel Meier, vice president of product development at Indiana-based FAST BioMedical; Jacob Schpok, executive director of Indiana Small Business Development Center’s Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and Tony Schy, managing director of Velocity Indiana, a mentor-driven seed accelerator designed to help build great entrepreneurs so that they can build great businesses.
This is the third year that RISE members have organized the Rose Startup conference. The organization is led by chapter president Ray Anderson, a senior electrical engineering student; vice president Ryan Tanaka, a junior civil engineering major; marketing director Elena Chong Loo, a senior electrical engineering and mathematics student; events coordinator Aaron Jones, a sophomore mechanical engineering student; and Benedict Wong, a freshman majoring in computer science and computer engineering.
