A Georgia-based company will seek approval on a preliminary proposal to redevelop a pair of downtown Richmond buildings as senior housing. The Palladium-Item reports Maurer Realty Corp. will go before the city's board of zoning appeals Thursday to request a variance for the 61-unit development. Plans call for the developer to acquire the former Odd Fellows building and the former Birck's Hardware building. Floors would be added to the Birck's property and a catwalk would be constructed to connect the two structures.

Maurer Realty Corp. and The Integral Group, another Georgia group involved in the project, will seek federal tax credits if the proposal moves forward.

Metropolitan Development Director Tony Foster says the project could “bring vitality” and additional jobs downtown.
