The Greater Martinsville Chamber of Commerce and Morgan County Economic Development Corp. are holding an event Friday focusing on connecting students with the needs of employers. More than four dozen companies will be represented at the Career Expo at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. September 30, 2014

News Release

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. – As students make curriculum choices throughout high school and beyond, it is important to help align their interests and abilities with the right education and training.

Thanks to the partnership between the Greater Martinsville Chamber of Commerce and Morgan County Economic Development Corporation, more than 1,200 middle and high school students will have an opportunity to participate in the 2014 Morgan County Career Expo on October 3rd at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. This builds off of a similar event hosted by the Chamber at Martinsville High School last year.

The Career Expo will be set up like a trade show, featuring 50 local employers who will help familiarize students with their companies and create awareness about the various post-high school credentials and skill sets needed to work in their industries. Represented will be Manufacturing, Logistics, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Construction, Agriculture, Utilities, Healthcare, Arts & Recreation, Education, Public Safety & Administration and Service companies. Ivy Tech Community College, WorkOne, Indiana Small Business Development Centers and other resource organizations will also be available to offer guidance.

“We feel that all of our students need to be aware that there are many avenues for obtaining a meaningful and fulfilling career,” noted Jamie Taylor, Executive Director of the Martinsville Chamber. “We also want to show that well-paying jobs at all levels exist here in their own community with local businesses.” Additionally, students will be made aware of which employers currently offer internship, summer employment, apprenticeship and tuition assistance programs.

The general public is welcome to attend an evening session from 3:30PM-7:30PM in order to meet, see and talk to local businesses and resource partners. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to bring their students back in order to walk the floor and explore career paths together.

“Through events like Career Expo and the School & Employer Workforce Forum held in August, our goal is to facilitate valuable partnerships between businesses and schools that will help prepare Morgan County’s future workforce,” said Lindsay Beckman, Director of Business Development for the Morgan County EDC.

This Career Expo is made possible by the generous support of South Central Indiana REMC, IU Health Morgan Hospital, Home Bank, Renaissance Food Group (Kroger), Keller Office Supply, Aaron's, Citizens Bank, Franciscan St. Francis Health – Mooresville, Duke Energy, First Merchants Bank, Morgan County Economic Development Corp., Martinsville Chamber and the Morgan County Fairgrounds.
