The Hoffman Hotel in South Bend is set to receive a facelift. The South Bend Tribune reports the Redevelopment Commission will spend $175,000 to repair the exterior of the soon-to-be local artist space and add new sidewalks and curbs. Redevelopment of the Hoffman Hotel downtown will get $175,000 of taxpayer money for curb and sidewalk improvements and repairs to the exterior of the building being transformed into space for artists.

The Redevelopment Commission on Thursday agreed to spend funds from the downtown TIF for improvements at the old hotel near the intersection of Main Street and LaSalle Avenue.

Equal Development of Indianapolis has been awarded $4.5 million in low-income tax credits to convert the 12-story building into 40 to 49 lofts for artists.

The company plans to invest a total of $5.4 million in the project, which includes a recording studio and gallery space for residents.

The commission also approved a 20-year option for the city to purchase the lot behind the hotel to accommodate a possible future parking garage.
