EDINBURGH, Ind. – On October 18, 2010, the Indiana National Guard, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Department of Correction signed an agreement releasing more than 1,200 acres of DNR land north of Camp Atterbury in exchange for approximately 2,000 acres at Putnamville Correctional Facility. Revitalizing portions of the original cantonment area built between 1942 and 1943.
After nearly three years of construction the Camp Atterbury North Barracks Complex and Railhead and Deployment Facility are complete. The new barracks complex adds an additional 1,200 beds and a dining facility to the north side of post, while the railhead consists of nine parallel rail loading tracks, marshalling yard, container yard, a scale house and vehicle inspection building.
The Camp Atterbury North Barracks Complex and Railhead and Deployment Facility greatly enhance Atterbury-Muscatatuck's capabilities for reception, sustainment and deployment operations, not only for the National Guard but all components across the Department of Defense.
