NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Manchester University is offering a game-changer for college graduates who are looking for a career shift into the health professions. With its new 12-month program, the University will prepare those without a science degree to succeed in pharmacy, medical, dental, and other health care programs.
“This is perfect for the person who has a college degree in education, or music, history, English – or any non-science field,” said President Dave McFadden. “This is for those who want to change careers, for those who need a jump-start in the sciences.”
In just one year of rigorous classroom and laboratory study – with considerable personal attention – students enrolled in MU's new Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health Professions Program can change the course of their futures. This is the only one-year, non-degree program of its kind in Indiana.
“The program has been designed so someone can come in and do all of the pre-requisites in a year,” said Raylene Rospond, vice president and dean of the College of Pharmacy. It is tailored for those who want to limit the time and cost involved to make the transition into careers that meet rising demand.
Rospond said the new offering builds on Manchester's solid reputation of preparing students for professions in health careers. Over the past five years, for example, 89 percent of Manchester biology-chemistry (pre-med) graduates who applied to medical school were accepted. The national average is about 40 percent.
The Post-Baccalaureate curriculum includes classes on the Fort Wayne campus, which houses the pharmacy school, and labs in the Science Center on the North Manchester campus. The class is restricted to 20 students, McFadden said, to allow for individual mentoring and instruction.
Enrollment begins immediately and classes begin in mid-May 2015. Tuition is $20,000 for the 12-month program. Federal loans are available.
The program will prepare students for health professional school entrance exams, such as the PCAT (pharmacy), MCAT (medical school), and DAT (dental). The program meets requirements to enroll in many pharmacy and medical schools and some dental and veterinary programs.
In addition to core classes such as microbiology and anatomy, the non-degree program will give students a well-rounded and holistic approach to health care, including courses in economics and writing skills designed for health care professionals.
The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health Professions Program is a natural for Manchester and its mission that calls for graduates “to improve the human condition.”
