Indiana Governor Mike Pence has announced appointees for numerous boards and commissions. They include panels focusing on issues ranging from government finance to workers compensation. August 14, 2014

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Governor Mike Pence today named Courtney Schaafsma as the Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance and Gabe Paul as the Administrative Law Judge for the State Employees’ Appeals Commission (SEAC). He also reappointed Chairwoman Linda Hamilton, among other members, to the Indiana Workers Compensation Board.

“Courtney Schaafsma is a proven leader who is wholly committed to providing Hoosiers with the accountable and responsible government they deserve,” said Governor Pence. “I applaud her willingness to serve and look forward to continued efficiency from the Department of Local Government Finance under her leadership.”

Courtney Schaafsma, CGFM, has been appointed as the Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance. Schaafsma has served as the Department's Budget Division Director for the past three years, overseeing the review and approval of budgets and property tax rates for over 2,400 units. She originally joined the Department as the Data Analysis Division Director in 2010. Prior to joining the Department, Schaafsma was a local government financial advisor with Crowe Horwath LLP. In that role, she worked with local governments throughout the State of Indiana on a variety of projects including budgeting, redevelopment, and municipal bond issuance. Schaafsma, of Carmel, received her Bachelor's and Master’s of Public Affairs through Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Bloomington. She is a Certified Government Financial Manager through the Association of Government Accountants and a Level II Assessor-Appraiser.

“Gabe Paul has been a tremendous asset to the State of Indiana for nearly a decade,” said Pence. “I am confident that he will fairly and impartially serve the public servants within Indiana’s state government as Administrative Law Judge for the State Employees’ Appeals Commission.”

Gabe Paul currently serves as Associate Chief Counsel for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, where he functions as the agency’s counsel for legal matters, and also serves as legislative support. From 2006 to 2012, he worked as a Staff Attorney at the Indiana Department of Transportation, where his duties included litigating SEAC matters on behalf of the agency. In addition, he previously served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Thomas G. Fisher of the Indiana Tax Court. Paul, of Carmel, has also worked in a variety of legal roles regarding tax liability, safety, and property for the City of Indianapolis and in the private sector. Paul earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University and his law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

Governor Pence also reappointed Linda Hamilton as Chairwoman of the Indiana Workers Compensation Board. Hamilton, of Fort Wayne, has served on the Board for 19 years, with 10 years as a single hearing member and 9 years as its Chairwoman.
