WellPoint: Name Change Fixes 'Lost Opportunity'

The chief marketing officer for WellPoint Inc. (NYSE: WLP) says the company's decision to change its name to Anthem will allow customers to make a more direct connection between the parent company and the name on their insurance cards. Patrick Blair says rebranding will be complete by the end of the year and has been in the works since Chief Executive Officer Joe Swedish joined the company in 2013. He says research indicates the company has been under-utilizing a "very powerful" asset in the minds of consumers. He believes the name will help correct a "lost opportunity" for consumers to tie the industry-level work done by the parent company with the local efforts of individual providers under the Anthem umbrella.

(NYSE: WLP) announced plans to change its corporate name to Anthem, Inc. The change will enable the Company to create better alignment between its corporate and product brands and better reflect its purpose and strategy to help transform health care.

The change will also enable the Company to streamline the communication of its values and the impact its family of companies are making on its members, associates, and investors.

Pending approval from shareholders, the change is expected to take place by the end of 2014. A special shareholder meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 in Indianapolis, Indiana for shareholders of record on September 12, 2014.
