BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Randall L. Tobias has been elected to a one-year term as chair of the Indiana University Board of Trustees.
Tobias, who was appointed to the board last year by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, is the former chairman and CEO at Eli Lilly and Co., former deputy secretary of state responsible for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the country’s first global AIDS coordinator with the rank of ambassador.
During its business meeting, the nine-member board also elected officers for one-year terms ending on Aug. 14, 2015. MaryEllen Bishop, who assumed the role of chair when Thomas E. Reilly resigned from the position last month, will serve as vice chair of the board. Donald Steven Lukes will serve as assistant treasurer.
“Indiana University is one of this state’s most important assets,” Tobias said. “It’s a privilege to be asked to be part of its leadership.”
The slate of new officers was selected by the board’s nominating committee.
“Randall Tobias brings to the chairmanship a wealth of institutional knowledge about IU, leadership experience in both the public and private sector, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in every area he has worked,” IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. “His guidance and expertise will be invaluable as we continue to work together to move IU forward and achieve the major goals we have set for the university.”
Tobias holds a B.S. degree from the IU Kelley School of Business, an honorary LL.D. from IU and five other honorary degrees. He has served as a director of the IU Foundation and the Varsity Club and as chairman of the Kelley School’s Dean’s Advisory Council. He received the IU Distinguished Alumni Service Award and was inducted into the Kelley School’s Academy of Alumni Fellows. He served on Duke University's board of trustees for 13 years and was chairman of the board for three of those years. He was presented the NCAA’s Flying Wedge Award for his leadership and service.
Bishop, a graduate of the Kelley School of Business and the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law and an attorney with Cohen, Garelick & Glazier in Indianapolis, was re-elected by IU graduates to a second three-year term on the board last year. She has been active in IU organizations for many years, serving on the IU Women's Philanthropy Council, the IU Athletics Committee and the McKinney School of Law board of visitors and as chairwoman of the IU Alumni Association in 2007-08.
Lukes, who joined IU in April as associate vice president and associate treasurer, previously worked for Citizens Energy and is a two-time graduate of the IU Kelley School of Business. He has had a progressive career in finance and accounting, as well as several years working in operations.
The Board of Trustees is Indiana University's governing board, its legal owner and final authority. The board holds the university's financial, physical and human assets and operations in trust for future generations. Its membership, terms of office, responsibilities, powers and electoral procedures are governed by the Indiana Code.
