A northern Indiana nonprofit designed to combat issues related to drug and alcohol abuse is shutting down. The South Bend Tribune reports the Healthy Communities Initiative of St. Joseph County experienced a major funding shortfall this year and must close after 20 years. The publication says HCI's coalition was in charge of how money was spent in the county for treatment, prevention and enforcement.

Director Beth Baker says the organization, and the entire state, will lose funding from the federal Access to Recovery program.

She also says money from the Governor's Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana arrived later than expected.

The state attributes the delay to a filing issue by the organization.
