Battery Innovation Center Continues Charge

The collaboration with EnterScape involves using the New Albany-based company's data collection technology at the BIC. Indianapolis-based Indy Power Systems is also working with the center and is part of a project at Yellowstone National Park that uses old Toyota Camry Hybrid batteries to power facilities at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch.

NEW ALBANY, Ind., and NEWBERRY, Ind. – EnterScape, an industrial utility monitoring company, has become a member of the Newberry-based Battery Innovation Center, a collaborative initiative that focuses on developing, testing and commercializing safe, reliable and lightweight energy storage systems for the defense and commercial sectors.
John Seymer, EnterScape's director of business development, said the company will install its real-time data collection system at the Battery Innovation Center. This will allow officials to allocate operational and testing costs better and improve facility efficiency.
“Our long-term plan is to fully integrate with the center's onsite renewable energy generation systems and to provide a full-spectrum data collection system,” he said. “We will have the opportunity to learn and collaborate with other Battery Innovation Center members, have access to the testing and manufacturing facility, and benefit by being associated with this well-respected research facility. We are impressed with the state-of-the-art facility in Newberry and the expertise of the team.”
The Battery Innovation Center includes both a consortium of dues-paying members and a 501(c)(3) institution that provides fee-for-service work and other research and development. Julie Weber, manager of business and finance, said the institution currently is working on projects for clients in Indianapolis, Chicago and Austin, Texas.
“In addition to these projects, we were selected in 2012 as a U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA) Proof of Concept Center under the i6 challenge,” she said. “As a Proof of Concept Center, the Battery Innovation Center provides business mentoring to small businesses or startups by connecting them with venture capital, potential partnerships, assisting in tech transfer from academia or government labs, and by assisting with technology validation and proofing to provide market-ready commercial or U.S. Department of Defense solutions.”
Weber said the Battery Innovation Center identified EnterScape's monitoring technology as a critical component to both commercial and Department of Defense energy storage devices.
“Among other goals, we would like to explore how it can affect microgrids in the residential, commercial and military sectors. By incorporating EnterScape's technology into the Battery Innovation Center, we will be able to demonstrate its capabilities to our partners, our customers and NSWC Crane,” she said. “EnterScape's technology also will allow our institution to more precisely assess customers' appropriate charges for energy consumption during testing, which is a huge benefit for a non-profit whose goal is to charge customers based only on real costs.”
Seymer said EnterScape's membership in the Battery Innovation Center reflects its belief of working with other enterprises to make a lasting impact.
“The Battery Innovation Center's world-class membership base will only grow stronger with time, and EnterScape wants to add to that strength,” he said.
EnterScape is based at the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana.
