INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Want to know where to find the nearest ear of sweet corn? Looking for the closest ATM? Can't remember where you parked your car? The answers to all these questions, and many more, can be found on the updated, free Indiana State Fair mobile app for smart phones.
Developed for iPhone and Android users by local company LiveLink Mobile, the app offers everything a person needs to plan and enjoy a trip to the State Fair. Its newest feature, an interactive map using a smart phone's Global Positioning System, is what makes the app a “must have” for all fairgoers.
As long as a user has the GPS system turned on in the phone's settings, the app will indicate where that person is in relation to items in six different categories:
-Exhibits & Attractions
-Food Vendors
-Parking areas
-ATMs
-Stroller/Wheelchair Rentals
-First Aid
In addition, the user can turn on and off any of these categories, meaning he can view only the Food Vendors and Parking areas if that’s all he’s interested in or he can quickly locate the nearest First Aid station in case of a medical emergency.
The colorful app also includes listings of every fair event for each of the 17 days of the fair; a special listing of all the Shane Co. Coliseum Concert Series shows; a special listing of all the Free Stage concerts; general information on hours, admission and special discounts; and a sharing feature that allows users to post comments and photos to their Facebook friends and Twitter followers. It even allows users to purchase discount admission tickets through July 31 with a few simple touches.
The updated app is the most recent way fair officials have been keeping current on new technologies. An early adopter of social media, the State Fair now has more than 140,000 people following its messages through Facebook , Twitter and Instagram. It also frequently sends out news and behind-the-scenes information through its Blue Ribbon Blog and YouTube channel. All of these outlets can be found on the fair’s web site, www.indianastatefair.com.
Fair general admission is $10; discount tickets are $7; kids 5 and younger are free. Discount tickets are available at www.indianastatefair.com presented by Mattress Firm and the Indiana State Fair box office through July 31, and can also be purchased at all participating Indiana Walmart stores and all CVS/pharmacy stores while supplies last. State Fair parking is $5.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After seven years of celebrating Indiana homegrown products, the Indiana State Fair is celebrating the “Year of the Coliseum” during the fair's 17-day run Aug. 1 – 17 in a number of ways, including with a new 92-page digital flip book that chronicles the building's 75-year history. The 18-month, $63 million Coliseum Complex renovation that wrapped up in April is the largest project in the fairgrounds' 123-year history, making it uniquely qualified to be honored with “Year of” status.
The State Fair Commission studied a variety of renovation options over several years before beginning a complete overhaul of the building on October 29, 2012. In the end, much of the structure’s history was preserved by reinstalling 96 original seats; recreating the original terrazzo floor; and leaving original walls and steel support beams exposed. The renovation finished three months ahead of schedule and includes the adjoining Youth Arena, a 30,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose facility that opened last August.
The $63 million renovation, financed through bonds payable with commission revenues and funds raised by the Indiana State Fair Foundation, makes the Coliseum complex the only modern, mid-sized multi-purpose facility in Central Indiana. It also makes agriculture a priority by keeping multiple animal entry/exit points to the arena floor and by rebuilding the 9 ft. wall that surrounds it.
The renovation did little to change the outside appearance of the Coliseum, but the inside has been completely transformed and now boasts several amenities that include:
• A spacious lobby with elevators to carry guests up to the main concourse
• More than 70 wall-mounted flat-screen TV monitors throughout the building
• Full ADA accessibility
• A double-tiered seating bowl with great sight lines from every seat
• An overhead LED video scoreboard and corresponding video ribbon board
• A state-of-the-art sound system
• Sound-absorbing walls and ceiling attachments for optimal acoustics
All these new features, and several others, will enhance the experience for all Coliseum guests. Visitors will also enjoy the freshly made, upscale concessions offered by The Savor Society, a Carmel-based company that will offer a wide variety of made-to-order foods on customized menus.
State Fair headline concerts are returning to the Coliseum for the first time in 30 years, and there’s a wide variety of shows to check out. The 2014 Shane Co. Coliseum Concert Series includes:
• Lynyrd Skynyrd with special guests Jamey Johnson and Drake White and the Big Fire – July 31 at 7 p.m.
• BritBeat – Aug. 1 at 7 p.m.
• Phillip Phillips – Aug. 5 at 8 p.m.
• American Idol Live! 2014 Tour – Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
• Pitbull – Aug. 8 at 8 p.m.
• Hunter Hayes – Aug. 9 at 8 p.m.
• Jim Gaffigan – Aug. 17 at 8 p.m.

In between the concerts, the Coliseum will be alive with a lot of livestock shows, Draft horse shows and other special events, including:

• Coliseum “Selfie Stations” – Fairgoers can take a picture with some of the famous celebrities and athletes that have been inside the Coliseum over the past 75 years at one of six different “Selfie Stations” located around the fairgrounds.
• Coliseum souvenirs – Visitors can purchase a special “Year of the Coliseum” collectable ornament, a set of coasters or many other items at the State Fair Gift Shop on Main Street near the Midway.
