Columbus Regional Hospital is planning a $30 million expansion. Our partners at The Republic report the project involves a new emergency department and expansion of the trauma center. Construction should be complete by the end of next year. Hospital officials had planned a more than $100 million expansion a few years ago, but that was derailed by flooding in 2008.

Chief Executive Officer Jim Bickel tells the newspaper this expansion will be funded from cash reserves.

He adds the current emergency department was built in 1992. It has the capacity for 25,000 patients a year, but has been serving 40,000.
