The Wayne County Foundation has announced nearly $140,000 in grants. The organization says the funding will support 35 local organizations looking to improve quality of life in Wayne County.

Wayne County, Ind. — The Wayne County Foundation has awarded $138,950 to thirty-five local organizations in support of programs or projects designed to improve the quality of life across Wayne County.

All of the Foundation's community grantmaking is made possible by income from unrestricted and endowed field-of-interest funds.

“The Foundation's competitive grantmaking cycles continue to be an effective way for us to invest in the community,” said Steve Borchers, the Foundation's executive director. “Our focus for this cycle was on a wide range of programs and initatives that serve to improve the quality of life throughout Wayne County. While there were a number of very worthy programs we were not able to fund at this time, we believe the ones we were able to support will benefit a significant number of people here in many, many ways.”

This is the complete list of grant awards approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors at its May Meeting:

Birth-To-Five, Inc. $3,011.00

To fund ten additional play groups a month to be held at public housing units.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Wayne County $6,800.00

To assist with the purchase of a communication system and safety equipment.

Cardinal Greenway $5,000.00

For assistance with the construction of an equipment storage building and shelter.

Centerville-Abington Elementary $1,200.00

To help pay for costumes for the History Club for two events.

Civic Hall Performing Arts Center $2,500.00

In support of the 2014-2015 Proudly Presenting Series.

Communities In Schools of Wayne County $1,000.00

To pay the registration fees for five site-coordinators to the 2014 Summer Insititute.

Community Kitchen of St. Paul's Episcopal Church $2,500.00

To purchase round tables and chairs to be used for the twice weekly meal service.

Cross Road Christian Recovery Center for Women $2,200.00

For office supplies, printing and postage.

DIPLOMAS In School Nursery for Teen Mothers $7,200.00

To cover a year's expense for two children and four teen parents at RHS.

Every Child Can Read, Inc. $10,000.00

For two new pilot classes to be added to The Third Grade Reading Academy for 2014.

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Inc. $5,000.00

To assist with thirty Mobile Pantry food distributions.

Grassroots Action Resource Center $4,500.00

For office equipment for the center.

HELP The Animals $5,757.00

To assist with the renovation of the large dog kennels at the shelter.

Historic Centerville, Inc. $3,176.26

For repairs and upgrades to the historic Mansion House.

Indiana Women in Need $5,000.00

To provide personal service assistance to women in Wayne County who are coping with the treatment of breast cancer.

Junior Achievement of Eastern IN $1,386.60

To offer a new program “Career Success” to five Wayne County high school classrooms.

National Alliance for Mentally Ill (NAMI) $1,150.00

For the speaker and supplies of the “Body, Mind, and Soul” program to educate religious leaders about mental illness.

Nettle Creek Music Boosters $2,500.00

For instrument and uniform updates for the marching band.

Open Arms Ministry $1,071.89

To purchase a laptop and portable printer.

Peer Information Center for Teens, Inc. $4,934.50

To update training materials for Peer Helpers.

Richmond Art Museum $2,750.00

For the Chinese Folk Pottery Exhibition.

Richmond City Series $4,950.00

To host a series of community events to help bring arts and culture to the commmunity.

Richmond Columbian Properties, Inc. $2,500.00

To assist with repairs and renovations to the William G. Scott House.

Richmond Community Schools $2,160.00

For camera equipment for a new photography class.

Richmond Day Nursery $5,149.86

To replace flooring in the basement area where children learn and play.

Richmond Family Y.M.C.A. $4,250.00

To assist with the Free Field Trip Friday summer program to help combat summer learning loss.

Richmond Friends School $2,500.00

To add two energy efficient air conditioning units.

Richmond Parks and Recreation Department $3,000.00

To provide free community concerts this summer.

Richmond Symphony Orchestra $1,500.00

To provide at least two free community concerts throughout Wayne County.

Special Olympics Indiana – Wayne County $2,800.00

In support of Special Olympic athletes summer games.

Vineyard Gateway Fellowship Church $5,500.00

To purchase a pallet truck stacker and platform carts.

Wayne County 4-H Association $2,500.00

To help bring a porfessional rodeo company to the 2014 Fair.

Wayne County Literacy Coalition $2,253.00

To purchase packets for students and volunteers to aid in learning.Whitewater Valley District 9 Pro Bono $10,000.00

To continue to provide free legal services to those in need.

Young Women's Christian Association $11,250.00

To replace the HVAC system at Genesis Shelter.

The next grant cycle deadline is July 31 for the Enhancing the Spirit of Community proposals. Prospective applicant organizations are encouraged to visit the Foundation’s Web site (www.waynecountyfoundation.org) or contact Andrea Stuckey at 962-1638 for additional information.
