HUNTINGTON, Ind. – After a national search process, Huntington University has named Greg Smitley as the institution's vice president for business and finance/treasurer. Smitley currently serves as the president/CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana.
“Greg brings a wealth of business acumen to the position, and we are blessed to have him join our senior leadership team,” President Sherilyn Emberton said. “His past service to the university as president of the alumni board and representation on the institution's Board of Trustees gives him great insight into the administrative workings and will serve him well in his new position.”
In his role as vice president for business and finance/treasurer, Smitley will be responsible for the management and conduct of the administrative operations and financial affairs of the university, including preparing the annual budget, overseeing the university's risk management efforts and related insurance policies as well as managing any major renovation and construction projects. He also will oversee the business office, physical plant, auxiliary services, human resources and information and technology services.

Prior to his work at the Better Business Bureau, Smitley spent 33 years in the banking industry, most recently as the chief operating officer for iAB Financial Bank and as the president/CEO for MarkleBank. During his tenure at MarkleBank, the Indiana Bankers Association recognized the institution as a Five Star Bank Member for outstanding service and recipient of the MAXI Award for excellence in marketing.
His areas of expertise include strategic planning, operations management, business development, community relations and regulatory compliance as well as lending and credit.
Smitley is a Huntington alumnus, having graduated in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He later received a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. He is a past president and current member of the alumni board at HU and also served on the Board of Trustees. He is a member of Huntington's President's Advisory Council on Excellence (PACE) and the HU Ventures Inc. board and a past member of the Huntington University Foundation board. He also has taught as an adjunct professor for Huntington’s Professional Programs.
Smitley will begin his position on June 9.
Smitley replaces Julie Hendryx who has served the interim vice president for business and finance for the past two years. Hendryx will continue with the university as senior director of human resources and operations.
