A Shelby County town will be the location of the 60th Village Post Office to open in the United States Postal Service's Greater Indiana District. Events are set for Friday to mark the opening of the VPO in Morristown. April 24, 2014

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Just about 30 minutes southeast of Indianapolis, Morristown in Shelby County is a busy town of about 1,200 people. During the last weekend in July each year, Morristown holds its Derby Days festival, which includes a business-sponsored derby race on Friday night, a vintage car parade on Saturday and fish a plenty at the Lion’s Club Fish Fry booth throughout the weekend.

On Friday, April 25, 2014, the residents of Morristown will witness another special event when the 60th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District opens at the Shell Food Mart, 340 W. Main Street, Morristown, IN 46161.

The grand opening is at 10 a.m. and an open house will follow from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Currently, the Shell Food Mart opens Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Summer hours will start on May 1 and this will mean that the store is open from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Rob Smith, manager of the store says they decided to open a VPO at the Shell Food Mart to offer extra services and convenience to their customers. “We open earlier and we close later than the Post Office, and we wanted our customers to have the convenience of buying stamps, and picking up flat-rate boxes after the Post Office had closed for the day. They can also drop off their regular mail for pickup,” Smith said. “Our customers have seen the sign and are already excited about it.”

The new postal center will be opened by Acting Manager of Post Office Operations Donna Hedges. Several USPS and local officials will be present at the event.

In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
