Fort Wayne to Host Vet Hiring Event

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Northeast Indiana Works and WorkOne Northeast will host a Veterans 1st Hiring Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 8 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Military veterans and their spouses will have a chance to discuss job opportunities with as many as 75 regional employers. Two dozen professionals from the Northeast Indiana Human Resource Association will also be on hand to evaluate resumes and help veterans prepare for job searches through mock interviews.
Although military veterans often have many desirable transferrable skills, they have generally had a more difficult time securing civilian employment in Indiana and northeast Indiana than others in the general population.
According to figures from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the average unemployment rate of veterans in northeast Indiana between 2010 and 2012 was 10.5 percent, compared to a 9.6 percent average unemployment rate for the entire regional population. Comparable figures for 2013 were unavailable.
“Helping Hoosiers who have protected our freedom find quality, well?]paying jobs is one of the most important things we can do to show our appreciation for their service,” said Scott B. Sanders, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “I am so pleased WorkOne is able to participate in this event and do our part to help these very special individuals find a good job that will utilize their unique skill sets.”
The Veterans 1st Hiring Event is being made possible with the support these partners: Lutheran Health Network; Hero2Hired (H2H), a program of the U.S. Department of Defense; Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM); Northeast Indiana Human Resource Association (NIHRA); Fort Wayne Base Community Council; Bose Public Affairs Group in Indianapolis; and Tradewell Tax and Financial in Fort Wayne.
Rep. Martin Carbaugh, R?]81st, is one of the key planners of the hiring event. Carbaugh authored H.B. 1242 in the last session of the Indiana General Assembly. The bill, which has been signed into law, makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against prospective employees because they are veterans.
“Ensuring that veterans have the opportunity to enter the workforce is essential; not only for them but because of the skills and experience they have to offer the business sector,” Carbaugh said. “Hoosier veterans sacrifice a great deal to protect our freedoms, and they deserve every opportunity to find a high?]quality job without being discriminated against.”
