Terre Haute, Ind. — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's biology program has a slightly different name, but continues to offer a high-quality, hands-on educational experience with award-winning professors.
The program (www.rose-hulman.edu/bbe) was under the applied biology name for its first 10 years, until being changed on April 1 to simply biology. The program's academic department name has been changed to Biology and Biomedical Engineering to reflect the difference.
“We're changing the name to better conform the program to our academic peer institutions,” said Jameel Ahmed, PhD, department head. “We still have a fantastic program that's educating students for rewarding careers in the life sciences.”
The biology bachelor's degree program produces biologists with the chemistry, mathematics and physics background needed to solve the multidisciplinary problems faced by life scientists in the coming decades. The program also offers unique senior thesis opportunities. Students wishing to strengthen their engineering skills can also earn the area minor in biomedical engineering, and other students may choose to pursue a second major in biochemistry and molecular biology.
The biology program prepares graduates to be outstanding scientists, according to Ahmed. It also prepares students for professional careers in government and industrial research laboratories, and in biotechnology and health-related industries.
“Those students wishing to continue their studies in graduate or health professions programs are exceptionally well qualified to do so,” Ahmed said.
Several biology and biomedical engineering graduates have earned two of Rose-Hulman's most prestigious student honors, the Herman A. Moench Distinguished Senior Award and John T. Royse Award Outstanding Graduate Award. In addition, graduates have been named Whitaker Global Scholars, an Institute of International Education program encouraging U.S. biomedical engineering leaders to see their career from an international perspective.
William Weiner, PhD, associate professor, was cited in The Princeton Review's 2012 Best 300 Professors book and earned the Dean's Outstanding Teacher Award in 2008. Lee Waite, PhD, professor and founding department head, was recognized with the Board of Trustees' Outstanding Scholar Award in 2007.
