Vocational students in northeast Indiana will benefit from an effort to move and preserve a more than century-old train station. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report a Grand Trunk Railway station in Valparaiso is set to be moved in early July to the Porter County Career and Technical Center campus. The initiative is expected to cost $160,000 and will eventually serve as classroom space for the school.

The effort will offer students potential opportunities to work on interior demolition, restoration and heating and air conditioning projects.

It is a collaboration between the school and several other organizations including: Crown Point-based Dillabaugh Inc., who is moving the structure; the Porter County Building Trades Council, who will deed the property to the school once the move is complete; and the Canadian National railroad, who will provide a flagger and is coordinating closing the track on the day of the move.

Director of Career and Technical Education Porter County Education Services Jon Groth says the restoration process will cost an additional $100,000, which he hopes can be raised within two years.

He has been spearheading the project and is set to discuss several logistical and right-of-way steps Tuesday with the city's Site Review Committee.
