News Release

Indianapolis, IN – April 7, 2014 – Indiana's largest pop culture and comic con has grown in size by adding an additional convention center hall in order to accommodate anticipated crowds of more than 15,000. Indy PopCon, held May 30 – June 1 in the Indiana Convention Center, now boasts over 200,000 square feet of usable space for comic books, collectibles, board and video gaming, fantasy exhibits, vendors, and more.

The expansion comes in direct response to feedback from customers concerns about long lines, over-crowding, and fears of overselling or selling out the entire convention. “We’ve learned a lot from other conventions in Indy, and we’re responding to the overwhelming demand from our fans,” said Ryan Keys, Exhibitor Coordinator. By expanding the hall space, widening aisles, and offering pre-sale tickets at steep discounts, the team behind PopCon hopes to avoid problems that have plagued other first time conventions around the country.

The economic impact of PopCon is already being felt by downtown Indiana businesses, as hotels are filling up on what would normally be a quiet weekend after the race and restaurants are adjusting staffing for a busier-than-expected weekend. “We’ve already filled our first dedicated room block with The Westin, and we’re now working on expanding those blocks,” said Carl Doninger, Convention Director. “We’re seeing strong interest not just within Indianapolis, but from travelers outside the region,” he added.

The primary usage of the new hall space will be to open up additional walkways and provide open exhibit areas throughout the convention center. The space will also open up registration for additional vendors and artists, which had been sold out since earlier this year. New exhibits are being implemented as well, including a video game demonstration zone, kid-friendly exhibits, and a Collector’s Museum featuring famous props and cars featured in television and movie shows.
