The Indiana Department of Transportation has awarded two contracts to a Michigan company. The deals with RMD Holdings are worth a total of nearly $2 million and involve installing cable barriers on Interstate 69 and Interstate 70.

Indianapolis, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded two contracts to install new median cable barriers on more than 27 miles of Interstates 69 and 70.

RMD Holdings of Chesterfield, Michigan submitted the low bid of $609,276 to install 8.8 miles of cable barrier on I-69 between State Road 28 (Exit 245) in Delaware County and State Road 26 (Exit 254) near the Grant County line. The company also submitted the low bid of $1,297,833 to install 18.6 miles of cable barrier on I-70 between State Road 103 (mile marker 126) in Henry County and Centerville Road (Exit 145) in Wayne County.

Both installations are expected to be complete this year. Over the next few years, INDOT plans to add median cable barriers on approximately 130 miles of interstates in various parts of the state.

Since beginning a pilot program in 2005, Indiana has installed 370 miles of median cable barriers statewide. INDOT prioritizes installation in areas where crash history, traffic volumes, speed, median width and road geometry dictate the greatest need.

Cable barrier systems are lines of highly tensioned cables between anchored posts in the medians of roads. They are designed to control cross-median crashes, which produce half of all severe-outcome crashes and nearly two-thirds of fatal crashes nationwide. When applied correctly, cable barriers can be a cost-effective system to reduce the frequency and severity of cross-median collisions and save lives.
