A global manufacturing partnership is set to make a huge manufacturing announcement in Tippecanoe County Wednesday morning. Inside INdiana Business has learned GE Aviation will locate a new jet aircraft engine operation in Lafayette. The plant will boost the state's already-strong aircraft technology sector that includes a GE Aviation components plant in Terre Haute and the aviation program at Purdue. General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) Chief Executive Officer Jeffery Immelt provided a few clues about the project earlier this year during a National Governor's Association meeting.

Without announcing a location, Immelt said GE likes building around “great, high-class universities” to help fill a worker pipeline and re-invest in education.

The plant will build on a lengthy relationship between Purdue and the global manufacturer that goes back more than a century.

Immelt has stated the company has traditionally hired more students from Purdue than any other university in the world.

He discussed that relationship and GE's future during a special conversation in West Lafayette last year with Purdue University President Mitch Daniels.
