INDIANAPOLIS- Aerodyn Engineering, Inc. (AEI) opened a second facility in Whitestown, IN in 2011 bringing 25 jobs to the community. As the company continues to expand, 20-25 additional jobs will be created by the end of 2014. The employment opportunities range from technicians to engineers with salaries up to $90,000.
One may ask what does AEI do? Well, this company answers questions that we wonder about but have no answers to – like how will this new product perform or how fast can it really go? Under the leadership of Dave Lawrence, President of AEI, has a customer base which includes Aerospace, Power Generation, Automotive and Industrial industries.
Lawrence, while managing a field testing division for another company, started AEI in 2002 after he expressed interest in adding machinery production as an additional service. The companies owner supported the idea and helped Lawrence fund the start up as his own company. Today, AEI provides a vast array of services to meet customer needs. These include complete field test services, sensor application and instrumentation of test articles, designing and configuring data acquisition systems, recording/reducing data, and writing test reports. AEI conducts testing on aircraft, power stations, aboard ships, and at manufacturing facilities, both domestically and internationally.
“Since 2002, we have received three 7(a) guaranty loans and a 504 guaranty loan which have taken us from start up to graduating to qualifying for standard commercial financing. We could not have started Aerodyn without the help of the SBA,” stated Lawrence. AEI has opened up two facilities using SBA guaranty loan programs, a manufacturing facility in Indianapolis and a state-of-the-art testing facility in Whitestown. To date, they received over $8.2 million in SBA guaranteed loans. The 504 guaranty loan obtained for the Whitestown facility allowed for the add-on of the aesthetic limestone lobby, general building expansion and various testing areas – allowing for more client projects at a time.
In a just over 10 years, AEI is approaching the threshold of becoming a large business. Year one revenues were $800,000 and in 2013 revenues were just shy of $13 million. Exporting technical support and slip rings make up 30-40% of their business. The slip rings manufactured are a premier line of high-speed data-quality. The slip rings are used worldwide for development and experimental testing of gas turbines and high-speed rotating machinery. AEI exports to Korea and Europe; and employs 12 in an office located in the United Kingdom.
