Fort Wayne Seeks East Coast FlightPosted: Updated:
Efforts to attract an East Coast flight to Fort Wayne International Airport have received a boost. The Fort Wayne Common Council has approved funding as part of a $2.5 million incentive and revenue guarantee package for airlines. Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority Air Services and Community Relations Director Jessica Miller says the effort is focusing on routes to Philadelphia and Newark. She says the authority has been in talks with American Airlines Inc. and US Airways Group Inc. (NYSE: LCC). The two airlines last month announced plans to merge.
The council approved $600,000 over two years to support the effort. The funds would be part of a package that includes a $600,000 federal grant and would be used to create a minimum revenue guarantee for carriers.
Fort Wayne has been working for more than a year to try to gain more flights to the east coast.
Those efforts include a study initiated by the Airport Authority, Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and Regional Air Service Committee to determine top locations for possible expansion.
